such contracts are actually legal and if you missed the period of cancelation (which in many contracts of that type is 3 months before the end of the period) you are pretty much screwed if you plan to come back to Germany in the next 30 years (I highly doubt that they will try to search for you in the US).
As a matter of fact, there are even contracts out there that are prolonged automatically for the period of a whole year (if the first period is also 1 year or longer).
However, I will only be able to tell for sure after seeing the contract and the terms and conditions included (AGB).
Breaks for short periods of time (for example for you trip to Ghana) are granted by most fitness companies. The contract period is then just prolonged for the time you were paused. However, this is only a voluntary thing. Check the contract.
