So I have been reading up self-discipline strategies and honestly, I’m not sure I find any all that “interesting.” Most of the suggestions for developing self-discipline are similar and none are all that exciting. But it seems like the most effective strategies are:

· Set realistic goals for what you are trying to accomplish. Break larger tasks into smaller, more manageable ones so that you don’t feel overwhelmed and find ways to pull yourself off task.

· Make lists. Having a visual list of what you want to accomplish is helpful. Crossing items off the list as they are completed brings a feeling of satisfaction that can be very motivating. That motivation will often help you to stay disciplined.

· Give yourself short breaks when needed, but then get back to work. Some experts suggest that you take 1 minute breaks where you stretch, get up and move, etc. and then get back to the task you are trying to accomplish.

· Set specific time limits for yourself, such as “I’m going to work for 30 minutes straight on [fill in the blank] without interruptions.” Make yourself stick to it. Then, take a quick break, and set another time limit – either working on the same task or working on a different task – but don’t stray from it for the entire time you set for yourself.

· Be mindful of your triggers. (i.e. what distracts you and/or pulls you off task?) and address those. For example, if one of your triggers is hunger, keep a snack close to where you are working so you can snack and continue working on your goal at the same time. If one of your triggers is your phone (notifications going off or phone calls, etc.) either turn off your phone for a period of time (if you can) or put your phone across the room so that you have to make an extra effort to check it – when the phone is within reach, people tend to look at it every time it makes a sound and that can be very distracting and counterproductive to a goal of self-discipline.

· Reward yourself. Find something to reward yourself with when you accomplish a certain task or number of tasks. Maybe it’s giving yourself time on social media, watching a movie, going out with a friend – whatever motivates you. Don’t let yourself have the reward until you accomplish a goal you’ve set for yourself. But remember – make goals small and attainable so that you get regular rewards and feel a sense of accomplishment and happiness associated with completing tasks.
