Customer Question

We have a (new to us) Bernina Artista 180. It has been working, but then we changed needles and color thread (both all-purpose thread) and suddenly the lower thread tension is way too loose and making large loops on almost every stitch. It looks like the thread is 1) not going from the bobbin up through the needle plate in the correct place, 2) the holder for the bobbin case is rotating out of place so the needle isn't hitting the bobbin at the right time in the rotation, and 3) the thread is getting wound around everything in the bobbin case (the bobbin case release flap, the claw on the stationary part of the bobbin head, and the part of the rotating bobbin case holder that is right around where the needle comes through on the left side). It also broke a needle once, probably when the bobbin case holder rotated out of place. It often makes a grinding sound, like when you run your finger along the teeth of a comb.
So the question is: what should we be focusing on to fix this? We were looking at tension and we've tried different types of threads and needles, but that only seems to 'fix' the issue for about an inch of stitching. We think that maybe the issue is that the bobbin case holder is not supposed to rotate and that the rotation is what's messing it up, but we're not sure.
