I am struggling to under stand short circuit fault clearing

Customer Question

I am struggling to under stand short circuit fault clearing time as it relates to sizing long runs of cable and the selection of circuit breakers for sub mains.
When sizing long runs of sub mains should I assume that the clearance time of the fault will be instantaneous and specify an appropriate CB or is it more prudent to specify a larger cable even thought this may cost much more.
