Sounds like an operational error, if you would like to try to figure out where it went wrong, I will be glad to offer assistance as I am very familiar with the 4940. Try this, take your detail tape out and try to recreate the condition, following the tape. If it locks up again, there is a procedure called "initial reset" in the book to clear it. Turn the key to "P", press and hold down the "SubTotal " key, while holding this down, unplug the register, count to five and plug it back in. After about 10 seconds the reg. will cycle and you can then let the "SubTotal" key back up. Now you must re-sign on a "clerk", turn key to "reg", press 1 and then the clerk key, this signs on clerk "!".
