Insurance for 17 year old temp driver question: I have two

This answer was rated:

Insurance for 17 year old temp driver question:

I have two different insurance agencies telling me two different things. One says that they cannot give me insurance for my son because in the state of Ohio and he is not a licensed driver yet. They say that it would go under my insurance if he had an accident while he was practice driving. The other agency says that he has to be insured. So what are the insurance requirements in the state of Ohio for a temp 17 year old driver?

My name is XXXXX XXXXX I am a General Specialist/ Notary Public and would love to assist you, If your son has his learners permit, it will be up to the individual insurance company as to whether they add your son to the policy. Some companies will not add a 17 year old until they are actually issued a Drivers license. The decision on how to insure your son will remain with the insurance company you choose. Some companies will require the teenager to be put on the policy as soon as they turn 17. It is an insurance companies decision on how they want to regulate it. This is a link on Ohio Insurance Law:

If you scroll down it discusses young teenage drivers.

When my son was 17 he drove under my policy with his learners permit until he got his Drivers License and at that time was added as a driver to my policy. When he was added as a Driver the premium payments increased for a young licensed driver.

He did have full drivers education and safety courses as well as a good student discount which helped reduce the premium a bit. I would shop around, because once he is listed as a driver on your policy, the premium will go up. I hope this information will be helpful and explains why you have gotten two different answers. Please let me know if you need further clarification. Joan
