The basting mechanism is stuck on your machine. Very, very common problem.
Remove the face (end) plate on the top left end (2 screws) Lube in there rather heavily with an aerosol lubricant such as PB Blaster or something similar. Then pull the needle bar down with your fingers until it engages.
If that fails, heat the area above the needle bar with a hair dryer, then try again to re-engage the needle bar.
If all that fails, a trip to the shop is indicated. In that case, I can advise you on how to proceed.

You're aware that when the lid is raised on the top right that the handwheel is unclutched from the rest of the machine?
The only thing that would cause the handwheel not to turn the mechanism otherwise would be if the handwheel itself is broken. Pop that decorative cover off the handwheel and look. Let me know.
