VerifiedHi there. Thanks for your question. According to SA tax law relating to donations tax, each taxpayer is entitled to donate R100 000 per annum free of donations tax.
Therefore each congregation member would be able to donate a maximum of R100 000 each year toward your pastor's house without having to pay any donations tax on the money donated.
The entire sum can go toward his new house and he will also not be taxed on it as the amounts donated to him are capital in nature and therefore fall outside the gross income definition in the Income Tax Act.
In summary, each congregation member can donate up to R100 000 a year tax free and the pastor can utilise the whole of such amounts donated toward his new house. There are therefore no tax implications!
As an aside, it's refreshing to see church members appreciating their Pastor in this way!
