Hello, and welcome back to Just Answer.

When you say there was no sun, but light, do you mean light was entering the cave, but the kettle was not in direct sunlight?

Was the moss growing on the outside of the copper kettle?

Thanks for all your additional detail.

Hi again,

It depends on the type of moss you are seeing. Different varieties of mosses grow at different rates under different conditions. For example, Java moss is one of the most slow growing mosses and it can take up to 2-3 years to grow 3 inches in a cave with very little light. Mosses don't need direct sunlight, nor moisture to grow, but if the moss is exposed to sunlight or any light for 5-10 hours a day, it will grow faster.
