Customer Question
I am using moonfruit to...

I am using moonfruit to build my website... I am currently using a sub domain of moonfruit while I develop the site....moonfruit uses html snippets... I created an Iframe of a back page of the website to be a news feed that can be displayed in multiple parts of the website.. The links in the iframe reopen in the iframe...I need the iframe links to open in the parent page, not the iframe itself.

I have tried adding links in html snipets like

 <a href=http://www.somelink.com target="_parent">some link text </a>

I have placed this html snipet which appears in the iframe and it still opens in the iframe itself, not the parent.

WebDevPro :

Hello,Customer Links open in a new window utilizing the following HTML element and attribute: <a href=http://www.somelink.com/ target="_blank.">some link</a>. The "_parent" attribute is utilized for opening anchor tags within the current frame, which isn't necessary unless you're using frames. If you want it to open in the main window, then you would use the "_top" attribute. Please let me know if my answer resolves your problem.

Customer:

Nope, does not work....The link still opens in the iframe itself...the site is www.odesktest.moonfruit.com.... I have used attribute "parent" "top" "blank"...they all still open in the iframe

Customer:

I want the link in the iframe to open in the parent page connected to the same domian

Customer:

i'm here

WebDevPro :

Hello, pleased to "e-meet" you.

Customer:

lol, yea, u 2

Customer:

i have spent about 14 hours trying to figure this out, im really annoyed

Customer:

lol

WebDevPro :

welcome to my world ;)

WebDevPro :

I'm not really that familiar with moonfruit, but it seems quite strange that "_top" didn't work. I'd almost guess there's some backend code not being recognized by their page-building system.

Customer:

I was thinking the same also, could it be because its on a sub domain?

WebDevPro :

No, HTML is HTML. Do you know if they permit the use of inline JavaScript?

Customer:

I really do not know, its just a html snippet box, i can put whatever code i want in the box

WebDevPro :

Here's another potential option <a href=http://somelink.com onclick="javascript:window.open()" />somelink</a>

Customer:

okay ill try it out now

WebDevPro :

Then within the parentheses you use the name of the page, eg. onclick="javascript:window.open("page_name.htm");"

WebDevPro :

Guess I lost you. :)

Customer:

ok ill send you the link i put in the html box

Customer:

<a href=http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554onclick="javascript:window.open()" />somelink</a>

WebDevPro :

Slightly modified: <a href="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554" onclick="javascript:window.open();" />somelink</a>

WebDevPro :

Do you know the name of the page you're working in?

WebDevPro :

If so, you would put that page name between the parentheses.

Customer:

Photos it is labled

Customer:

in the organise pages

Customer:

okay, i will put photos between the () and see if it works

Customer:

<a href="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554" onclick="javascript:window.open(photos);" />somelink</a>

Customer:

that is what i put, it does not work...do I need to clear history or somthing maybe to make it work?

Customer:

The link works, however it still opens in the iframe itself, not in the parent page

WebDevPro :

Sorry, I wasn't clear. You would put something like window.open('photos.htm') or whatever the actual name of the page is.

Customer:

What do you mean by name? it is labled phots, but the adress is photos/456 etc...

WebDevPro :

If that doesn't work, then there is something definitely going on with moonfruit putting something within the back-end code because I just tested this by writing two pages and it worked like a snap.

Customer:

"photos" i mean

WebDevPro :

so there's no page name at the end like photos/456.htm or photos/456/index.htm?

Customer:

no, i just name the pages on a page labler, where you can add or delete pages

Customer:

http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554 thats the link for the photos page...its labled photos on the page creator, thats it..I don't actually see the code of the website

WebDevPro :

Aaah... sounds like maybe they're using PHP. Okay, for grins try this as the page name: index.php

WebDevPro :

So: javascript.window.open(index.php)

WebDevPro :

sorry, javascript:window.open('index.php')

Customer:

<a href="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554" onclick="javascript:window.open('index.php');" />somelink</a>

Customer:

it did somthing, it opened a new window

Customer:

but directed me to the homepage still

Customer:

in the new window

WebDevPro :

A-ha! So okay, try:

WebDevPro :

<a href="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554');" />somelink</a>

Customer:

thats good, except it opens in a new browser window

Customer:

this is good :)...can we make it open in the same browser window?

WebDevPro :

good, we're close... very close! Try javascript.window.open('./4561934554')

Customer:

<a href="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554" onclick="javascript:window.open('./4561934554');" />somelink</a>

Customer:

still new browser window

WebDevPro :

hmmmm....

WebDevPro :

well, the second parameter in window.open() method is the target. Maybe:

WebDevPro :

<a href="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554', '_top');" />somelink</a>

Customer:

wow! it worked!

Customer:

thank you!

WebDevPro :

You are very welcome!

WebDevPro :

Doesn't it feel great? :)

WebDevPro :

Now you can sleep soundly.

Customer:

yes, that was fun

WebDevPro :

I'm glad I could help you.

Customer:

i have another problem though,

i do have a question though, after i clicked the link, and clicked back, the iframe contents is gone

Customer:

a # XXXXX after www.odesktest.moonfruit.com, after i click the link and go back to the main page, the iframe content is no longer there

Customer:

should i make a new question?

Customer:

for you?

WebDevPro :

No, that shouldn't be much of a problem. Try changing '_top' to '_parent' and see what happens.

Customer:

are you from the us? will do

WebDevPro :

Yes, I'm American.

Customer:

me too...

Customer:

<a href="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/photos/4561934554', '_parent');" />somelink</a>

Customer:

opens in iframe now

Customer:

i changed it back to top incase you went to site

Customer:

http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/# XXXXX then iframe contents is missing

Customer:

with the # XXXXX it, need to reload page without # XXXXX get iframe contents back

WebDevPro :

Okay, you have access to the actual <iframe></iframe> element, correct?

Customer:

yea

Customer:

ill send you info

Customer:

<html>

</html>

Customer:

whoops

Customer:

i had body tages at the end

Customer:

do i need opeing body tages and html tags?

Customer:

WebDevPro :

You need the closing </iframe>

Customer:

<iframe src="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/about/4561934553" width="500" height="500" onload="javascript:location.reload(true);"</iframe>

Customer:

thats how i put it in the snippet, appears blank

WebDevPro :

hmmm, what browser are you using?

Customer:

internet explorer

Customer:

i didnt put any body or html tags, just that

WebDevPro :

Oh, you need the html and body tags, otherwise the browser doesn't know how to render anything in it.

WebDevPro :

and remove that javascript I sent you. The reason it's not appearing is because the page is repeatedly reloading; it's in a loop.

Customer:

ill try it now, i just did it, ill try urs

Customer:

sorry, let me try again

WebDevPro :

Yeah, see if you hover your mouse over where the iframe is at on the home page you'll see your mouse cursor begin to spin. oops, that's not right.

Customer:

<html>
<body>

<iframe src="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/about/4561934553" width="500" height="500" onload="javascript:location.reload(true);"</iframe>

</html>

Customer:

that is wat i put, its blank

Customer:

WebDevPro :

remove the onload="javascript:location.reload(true);" from the iframe tag and that should fix it being blank.

Customer:

<html>
<body>

<iframe src="http://odesktest.moonfruit.com/#/about/4561934553" width="500" height="500"
