VerifiedThe Public Adjuster is correct in his fee. You are looking at the situation incorrect. The $20,000 the insurance company is offering you was arrived at by an estimate which was put together wrong. The Public Adjuster must redo everything that has been done so far. This is much harder to do than if the Public Adjuster was involved from the get go. Unfortunately, the fact that you have had your insurance for 25 years means absolutely nothing. The insurance company wants to low ball every claim- especially water damage. If the Public Adjuster says he can help, you should trust him. 10% of 20,000 is only $2,000. He's talking about getting you an additional $40,000. You definitely need the help- Why would you think you know anything about the insurance claims process? I'm not trying to beat you up, but if you do not take this advice, your home will not be fixed correctly (at least with your insurance company money), and you will end up hiring an attorney at 33% of the total settlement. It is up to YOU to prove your loss, the Public Adjuster does this for you. By going at it alone, YOU have proven $20,000 of damage, 1/3 of what you deserve. The Public Adjuster must fix your mistakes. If you want to blame somebody, blame the insurance company, not the Public Adjuster- if the insurance company did their job, he wouldn't have one! Because you let the insurance company mess the claim up already, the claims process is going to take much longer than if you hired a Public Adjuster right away. It may take months to settle your loss. I would plan on staying in the hotel or looking for a house to rent. If you don't act now, your insurance company will consider your loss closed and stop paying for the hotel. Some Public Adjuster's would refer you to an attorney at this point. The insurance company will fight tooth and nail for every dollar making the job much more difficult. Wish I had better news for you, and it really doesn't matter which insurance company you have, they all do the same thing. Think about that next time you see one of their commercials.
