Hi there,

For the both National Anthem and the Pledge:

- if you are in the military or a veteran, you can salute

- if you are not, then you should take off any hats, stand at attention, AND put your right hand over your heart

Official law for the anthem:

Official law of the pledge:

However, as this page ( points, out, your first amendment rights to free speech mean that there's no penalty for not following these rules.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Years ago, in elementary school, we were taught to stand at attention for the singing of the anthem, and then place our hands over our heart for teh pledge (only). Is there any expert on the etiquette (like Emily Post) that you know of? I understand that law and constitutional rights are involved here, but my question is on etiquette. Your answer does not meet my need. I will, however, be satisfied if it is the best you can come up with.

Ok, thanks for clarifying your question -- I hadn't realized you were interested in etiquette as opposed to official rules. Ask for Emily Post and you shall receive Smile
