To not damage your sciatic nerve it would be better to do sit-up on a soft surface (like a mattress) and be sure to have lost weight enough before starting to train (too many try to train while heavy while you must reduce your weight first to prevent join damage and other problems).

At 78 you may have accumulated lot abdominal fat, this fat take a while to disappear, so be patient. Also, at that age the collagen in the skin is no longer what it used to be, so a slow fat reduction is wiser to not end up with a kangaroo pouch.
