Ask a Microsoft Word Question
>I am trying to follow a complex numbering format for a graduate thesis that requires: no page numbers in the first two pages; an Arabic numeral 1 on the Abstract page; lowercase Roman numerals on the TOC pages; and then Arabic numbers restarting at 1 on the first page of Chapter 1.

My problem is this: despite setting the 5 required sections so that numbers restart at 1 (or i), every time I start the Arabic numbers for the body text at Chapter 1, the page numbers come back for the title and copyright pages; and every time I delete the page numbers for this Section 1, the numbers are deleted from Section 5 also. How can I get it so that Section 1 and Section 5 footers are no longer correlated?

Have you set all section "Link to Previous" settings to "off?"

A Word document's headings and footers are like an old mechanical player piano music sheet. They loop from the end back to the beginning.

No, I haven't--I tried to, but couldn't figure out how!
