Im interested in booking a hostel in NYC for one night, but

I'm interested in booking a hostel in NYC for one night, but find the web interfaces used for booking them to be very confusing. I can't tell what they mean by single (it seems to be more like "double occupancy"), I don't know how the dorm/shared areas work and phone numbers often aren't listed so there's no one ask these questions. Any advice on how do this?
Most hostels have a dorm-style set-up, so there may be four or six people sharing a big room. It's often bunk beds, so "single" should mean that there is going to be one person staying there.

Here are a couple of places you could try that might be easier to book online. Each of these sites also has a telephone number - either through a Contact Us link, or listed at the bottom.

Good luck.
