Sometimes payments for large purchases such as cars or homes cannot be put on credit cards for different reasons. Often the main reason is to keep their clients in a better financial position. In most cases, making such a large payment on a credit card gets people deeper and deeper into debt, thus putting them at risk for default on a loan. Some finance companies try to avoid this by accepting payments only by check or debit card.

Simply contact your lender to find out their specific policy on what types of payments they receive. If they don't allow payment by credit card, you might see if they allow it by check card/debit card with a credit card logo. Many banks and credit unions offer rewards programs that are similar to credit card reward programs. Making a regular mortgage payment via this method would accrue points pretty quickly.
