Hello, welcome to Just Answer.

Do you refer to "absolute in time" generation like baby-boomer gen-x and gen-y or just time span between generations totally independent of how it's located historically?

parents then there kids then there kids and so on. how do you count them from the parents or the kids as the 1 2 3 generation?

There is never a generation 0.

The first generation is always the oldest individual alive (as women live longer on average than men, it's usually a women but it can also be counted including mens). The highest number is XXXXX latest to be born in the family. When the oldest die, the generation number is XXXXX

The oldest is the generation anchor point, it's absolute for whole branch of relative. When the oldest die, all sons and daughters can start their own generation count ignoring the others or decide to collectively use the whole family tree (in that case the one with the longest succession of lineage will apply).

The average generation length in the USA is 25.2. Average age of women in 2004 when they gave birth for the first time (that number vary each year and in each country).
