This is a trick question!

There are at least 3 valid answers, though:
  • Give the first four people an apple. Then give the last person an apple still in the basket.
  • Give the first four people an apple. Assuming the basket is large enough, put the final person inside the basket with the final apple.
  • The problem doesn't say that each person must eat 1 whole apple, so cut the 4 apples into pieces, and divide them up between the 5 people. Each person gets 4/5 of an apple. (Or just make 4 apples into applesauce and share that.)

I guess that works as well. However, they aren't sharing all 5 apples in that case.
