It sounds like you have an older TV that probably has a standard cable port and an sound input and output jack. It is possible that the two input jacks are one for video and one for sound, (mono, not stereo). But almost always a video jack is colored yellow and and audio jack is white (stereo jacks are either red and white or red and black). That is why I suspect one is audio input and the other is audio output.
This is not unusual. Older TVs were commonly not built with RCA jacks. DVD's almost always require an RCA or an S-video cable to connect, so the two are incompatible.
Fortunately, there is a solution. You need to buy an "RF Modulator". This will let you plug your DVD using the RCA cables, then connect the converter to the TV using the coaxial cable. You can connect the cable from the wall into the converter two so you don't have to switch cables back and forth every time you move from DVD to live TV.
