Here are several home remedies that have been known to work, keeping cockroaches and spiders away. Placing hedge apples in a area can keep cockroaches away as well as spiders. Hedge apples are the fruit of the Osage Orange Tree, it is green knotty fruit that resembles a orange. Just run a string through them and hang them, or place them in corners. Crushing the fruit may also help. Contrary to some, the osage orange, will attract mice and rats. Squirrels also love them and I have seen no effect on their health. Walnuts or Chestnuts, will keep spiders away. Drill a hole in the shell of nut and place anywhere, to deter spiders. Boric acid is very effective to kill cockroaches but boric acid is permanently ineffective once it becomes damp. Spiders seem to be attracted to propane. Use diatomaceous earth, a natural product, available at most pet supply, and pool supply businesses. Scatter the very fine dust, around any location needed. Mask usage reccomended for safety. Insects and spiders walk through it and die. It is also effective for use in your garden for many pest and even kills slugs. Pantyhose filled with moth balls will often be effective since spiders don't like the smell and will not enter. It also removes the musty damp smell. Lemon slices, eucalyptus, fabric softner sheets, or cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil, will also deter pests. 409 sprayed around will kill ants and spiders. It is also a very good wasp and hornet killer. Trim weeds around the building foundation and remove debris to discourage insects and spiders. Planting mint along the exterior walls will also deter spiders and roaches.
