I asked about the check engine light and which engine you have. You responded with no thanks???

Ask Your Own Ford Question

P0171. 5.4l

Have you done anything so far to address the lean code, diagnostics or repairs?

Are you getting misfires on bank 1 or 2 cylinders?

Will your scan tool show short term fuel trims?

Ask Your Own Ford Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
No. Misfires-yes. Stftrm-yes

Idling at operating temp, what are the bank 1 and 2 short term trims?

Can you check the fuel pressure while misfiring?

Ask Your Own Ford Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Truck idles fine. When accelerating it misfires got a new fuel pump in January I'll have to try to get you the fuel trims short-term have done a propane check extensive for vacuum leaks found none the PCV valve you can blow through it both ways

Please respond once you have the readings I need.

Ask Your Own Ford Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Short-term fuel trim one -23. 4 short-term fuel trim too-14. 8

Thanks, ***** ***** get me the fuel pressure, and the MAF sensor reading?

Ask Your Own Ford Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I have no readings for either one of those

With the info I have right now I can make an educated guess, but I can not pinpoint this down to the exact issue as of yet due to not enough readings. is that okay?

Ask Your Own Ford Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Certainly that's all right I don't have a very good scanner it won't even pull up a freeze frame right now. I guess I have to run a drive cycle or something
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Won't validate the pids

Your trims indicate it is running lean which means there is more oxygen in the exhaust than there should be and which the PCM assumes there should be based on the amount coming in through the MAF sensor. So it can be low fuel pressure, a vacuum leak, or a dirty MAF. Try spraying starting fluid in shirt bursts around the intake, all gaskets and seals, and vacuum lines. That is more effective than propane. If a leak is hit it will the rpm. Especially check the hose above the passenger valve cover.

You now will see a rating scale a row of yellow stars from bad to excellent, because I have posted my 1st full/partial answer. When you rate I get a portion of the deposit you made, no rating means you still paid, but I earn nothing. My goal is understanding your question, and addressing it in full detail. In return, receiving a 5-star rating. Rating does not close the post or stop the conversation. Please keep in contact and reply as much as needed. Thanks, Chris

I put a brand new mass air flow sensor on it about 3 hours ago I just sprayed a whole can of starting fluid all around the intake hoses everything no change in idle and I don't know what the fuel pressure is cuz I have no fuel pressure tester
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I saw no role of yellow stars either

Here are some more tests to do https://www.dropbox.com/s/73jfvjjwikwldv6/010171.pdf?dl=0

fuel pump pressure @ 12 psig. dips slightly as engine revs. unplug vacuum from regulator-no change. will try to deadhead pump and see if it is regulator problem. doubtful. maybe collapsed pump intake filter. walbro pump-255 liters per hour high pressure. recommended on FTE forum. installed jan this year. 80 bucks. removed filter and blew thru it. nothing but clean gas. easy to blow thru. guess I can deadhead pump somewhere under truck. i'll be watching gage closely.
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
can also check voltage at inertia switch. but can hear pump running already.

So far this looks like a bad pump.

I'm emptying fuel tank as we speak

OK

Ask Your Own Ford Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
turns out, it wasn't the fuel pump. little manifold, on top of the pump; one side relieves back to the canister in the tank, and the other side fuels the rail thru the filter. are you with me? 2 little seals, orange in color, that seal this manifold. one had a tear in it. outlet of the pump. must have been spraying into the tank for months; finally part of seal tore away and fuel dropped to about 12 psig. not enough to power the truck, but enough to idle the truck. got my pick set out and changed the two-one for the other. back to 40 psig/34 psig. now you'll really be earning your keep if you can give me the part # for these 2 little seals. but it would not surprise me if you have no knowledge of them. they seal the output of the fuel pump.

Ford does not list those seals because they come with a fuel pump replacement from Motorcraft.
