Can a bad timing chain cause a code for the cam position sensor? 1997 Explorer 5.0

Hello I will help,

Yes it can. The computer compares the signals from the crankshaft and cam shaft sensors and if they don't agree it will set a code for the cam. The chain is connected to the crank and that drives the cam so if the chain is worn the signals will not agree.
