Customer Question
I have a 2000...

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger V6 4.0 engiine, and was told that the camshaft position sensor needs to be replaced. I''m not sure where it's located, but I would like to attempt to replace it myself

Mechanic's Assistant: Which particular sensor are you asking about? And have any trouble codes been triggered?

Autozone diagnostic machine produced code P1309. I was told I needed the Camshaft Position Sensor.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Ranger yourself? What have you tried so far?

My nephew, who is more knowledgeable than I, is going to assist me. We haven't tried anything yet. Bought the sensor this morning. I can't seem to locate the old sensor.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

At high rates of speed on highways, the Overdrive light blinks on and off. Not sure if this issue has anything to do with the Camshaft

No problem. Thank you

You need to remove the upper intake to access camshaft position sensor. Here is a picture with replacement instructions. The synchronizer which is what the camshaft position sensor mounts on top of is also common to fail so it might be worth replacing that at the same time. My goal is to provide 5 star service so please let me know if you have any questions, thanks.
