1986 F-150, 4.9l, just purchased the truck. Rough idle, changed plugs (to Autolite, will consider going to Motorcraft). We checked the plugs a few days after changing and with minimal driving after plugs changed. Found the new #1 cylinder plug to be very dirty, in just a few days.

Have you measured the actual spark gap at #1 ?

Skill level is not high, so I appreciate your patience. I'll likely take your input to the repair shop if necessary. My initial concern is the dirty plug in only a few days, meaning, is a valve job in order?

All plug gaps are within spec. (.042-.046).

it could be a few things, valve job, bad rings, poor gap or spark, bad plug even though its new, timing chain issues, cam shaft lobes worn, lifter worn. If you want just log back into the question and let me know what the mechanic says and ill make sure it checks out ok before you approve any repairs.
