Oil pressure/quantity indication Ford Escape. No problem…

Customer Question
Oil pressure/quantity indication Ford...

Oil pressure/quantity indication Ford Escape. No problem when cold. Flickers at low idle as it warms up. Can stay on at red lights. Goes off above 1000 rpm. Oil quantity is full.

Mechanic's Assistant: How old is your oil pump? Has the check engine light come on?

No check engine light at all. Lube unit is original from 2003/180K miles.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Escape yourself? What have you tried so far?

Keeping oil quantity at max per limits. Driving while cold. Remaining above 1000 rpm. I anticipate oil pressure quantity indication problem or lube unit problem. Won't attempt repairs if it looks like lube unit itself.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Recent event, last couple weeks. Last oil change 12 mo/5000 miles. Using 5W20 oil.

You are using the recommended grade of 5w20, but if the light is on at hot idle, the engine has slightly lower than minimum spec for oil pressure.

A workshop gauge needs to be fitted as an initial test.

At 180k miles, the engine has more internal clearance from wear, hence the lower oil pressure at idle.

If the pressure is just down a little, a change to 5w30 might be enough to bring it up to within specs.

Ultimately, an engine rebuild would be on the cards sometime.

Hope this helps.
