I have a 2008 Ford F150 93,000 miles 5.4 L. Occasionally I get a burnt oil smell into the cab. This happens with engine idling or when running down the rood. Valve covers don't seem to have any leaks and the tail pipe has no black or white coating.

Mechanic's Assistant: When was your last oil change?

900 miles ago

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your F150 yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes and have have looked for possible leaks can't fine any even on the driveway.

Have you physically got underneath the vehicle and looked for potential oil leaks?

no

The smell is just occasionally and like it comes right into the cab intake and the is gone for awhile
Ford Mechanic: CTFordTech, Ford Technician replied 8 months ago
If you could, I would recommend trying to slide underneath and taking a peak to see if any oil is present. Something may be leaking slowly and if it drips onto the exhaust it could give you the burnt oil smell. Could be anything from a oil pan gasket, the back side of the valve cover leaking or even possibly a transmission fluid leak from a cooler line. Other possibility is a front pinion or axle seal of the truck is 4x4.

No you looked under the truck and didn’t find any oil leaks?

Do you notice if the truck has any kind of exhaust leak? The F150’s are known to have exhaust manifold problems and this could also lead to a smell in the cab.
