There's a humming or groaning noise from the engine

Customer Question
There's a humming or...

There's a humming or groaning noise from the engine compartment, it varies in intensity day to day, but becomes higher pitched as the engine speed increases. It does not seem to change as the steering wheel is turned hard.

Mechanic's Assistant: Do you have the car's service manual? Does the car have airbags?

Manual is not at hand. It's a 2007 Focus, it has front airbags.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Focus yourself? What have you tried so far?

No, but it has recently been inspected.

Hello my name is ***** ***** welcome to just answers! I will be assisting you with all of your vehicle questions today. Give me one moment while I review your question and come back with a answer. Please be aware I do not know your skill level or abilities so I will be asking a lot of questions and in a lot of cases we will respond to each other quite a lot before we find a solution. As far as phone calls are concerned that is the system prompting you, not me, and they do cost more money, I prefer text but in some cases a phone call is required. If I don’t answer right away or quickly in conversation I am helping another customer or have stepped out for a moment and will respond as soon as I can. Ok lets get started!

Ok first what you want to do is remove the serpentine belt crank engine back up to see if the noise goes away, if so start checling pulleys for resistance or crunching when you turn them

Sorry, I'm a recovering mechanic, no more under the hood for me, though I will check fluid levels if it's not raining. I was just looking for likely culprits before I brought it in for service. Some more info - no battery problems; now I hear the same sound in lots of cars, just softer, mine never goes away, just gets louder and now more often.
Ford Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 7 months ago

Has this sounds always been present since you have owned it?

Ask Your Own Ford Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
No, but it has occurred intermittently over the last few years, only lately is it as so insistent.
Ford Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 7 months ago

It may be your throttle body, some of them can get quite loud, I would have that checked too and a throttle body clean is always good
