Hello, the blower still works, it just blows out the defroster instead of the vents when going up a hill/hard on the throttle?

Ask Your Own Ford Question

That is a possibility that maybe I didn't realize. Is that a common problem?
Ford Mechanic: HDGENE, Ford Senior Master/Diesel/Trans replied 7 months ago

Yes, when the ac control vents work off of vacuum. When there is a loss of vacuum its blows out of the defroster. Vacuum is supplied from the engine. When on a hard accel the engine vacuum supply drops. There is a check valve in line to a vacuum resouvoir tank to keep the vents blowing out the right mode. If the check valve is bad or there is a vacuum leak in the vacuum tank, it will blow out the defroster. The vacuum tank is located behind the ac evaporator housing, so it would requre removal of the ac evaporator to get to it. Follow the vacuum supply gong behind the ac box and through the firewall under the passenger side dash. The check valve is on the vacuum tank. What most people do is buy a new vacuum tank and check valve and mount it remotely inside the passenger side dash by running the vacuum supply through the fender and kickpanel to get inside the vehicle.

Will a smoke test help with diagnostic ?
Ford Mechanic: HDGENE, Ford Senior Master/Diesel/Trans replied 7 months ago

Yes you can push smoke through the vacuum supply line to find the source of a vacuum leak. Most people opt to relocate the vacuum tank verses removing the ac evaportor
