After panic stop brake pedal travels well towards floor

After panic stop brake...

After panic stop brake pedal travels well towards floor before engaging.

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you tried cleaning and oiling the brake pedal's pivot under the dash?

Nope. Don't know why this would shorten travel, though.

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model/year of your Ford?

2009 Escape, 6 cyl, AWD

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Escape yourself? What have you tried so far?

Not working on it taking it in. Mechanics are scratching heads, suggested replacing master cylinder but anecdotal comments online don't support the expense. Bleeding system & replacing fluid is appealing.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Doesn't seem to be an isolated incident

Bought used with +20,000 miles, just turned 121,000 miles. System has not been disassembled.

Ok, let me take look at some possible causes.

Ask Your Own Ford Question
Customer reply replied 9 months ago
Good. Lots of anecdotal complaints, no solutions.

The first thing listed is complete system brake bleeding to make sure there is no air. Then testing the master cylinder by blocking the ports, the pedal should be rock solid with relatively no travel, if this passes and it is bled, the pads, hoses, and caliper guide pins are not stuck, then HCU replacement would be needed. Basically the HCU is the last component on the list of possible causes.

Ask Your Own Ford Question

We have replace tons of rear brake hoses on these vehicles, if there is any cracking at all I would replace them also.
