Hi! 2002 Mountaineer 4.0 SOHC, AWD, approx. 85k miles. Last couple months been experiencing intermittent crank but no start situations, both hot and cold engine. The other day, after failing to start for my wife her father got it going (I believe using starting fluid) and it ran very rough. Would start up without assistance but idle very rough, violent shaking. Check engine light illuminated, only code indicated faulty ignition coil. Replaced coil last night, started right up, idled and ran like new. Drove about 4 miles, engine would again crank but no start. Fuel pump relay clicks, (only 'test' I've performed on relay) and fuel sprays from fuel rail when poked, I have not tested fuel pressure with gauge. I can also hear fuel pump "hum" for a second or two before/when starting.
I should note that, due to bro***** *****nkage/shifter, I replaced the steering column and tumbler in late June. Never had no-start situation beforehand.
Also, the first few no-start situations were resolved by bleeding a little fuel from rail and pressing the inertia switch. Doesn't help anymore.
I have low budget and limited knowledge, where should I look?

Dan since you are not setting anymore fault codes I would start with checking to see if you have spark at the spark plugs when it will not start and if that checks okay then install a fuel pressure gauge and read the actual fuel pressure when it will not start, normal fuel pressure at the service port needs to be 30 to 65 PSI, anything let then 30 would indicate either the fuel filter is restricted or the pump is failing. Lets start there and we can work from there if need be.
