Customer Question

Echoing a similar issue, but @ COP #5, 02 Expedition. No water leaks, Replaced COP hardness pigtail, resolved misfire. CEL reappeared this morning, had the cash so simply replaced COP #5 knowing I have a possible short... COP immediately began smoking immediately. Seems clear at this point I have a short. Anyone familiar with a common area for bare wire that would be the culprit?

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

This is happening because the coil driver circuit is shorted to ground, which could be an internal failure in the engine controller or it could be a wiring issue.

The first thing that will need to be done is verify that the short is present using an ohm meter or test light. If present then the PCM will need to be unplugged. If the short goes away then the PCM will need to be replaced.

If it's still present then the circuit is shorted to ground somewhere in the harness between the PCM and coil, which could be at any point in the harness. You could either attempt to locate the problem area and repair it, or you could simply cut the wire at both ends and hard wire the circuit.

I hope that helps! My goal is your satisfaction today. If you feel I've been professional and helpful, your 5-star rating at this time is most appreciated. However, if you still need my help you can reply back here and I'll respond as soon as possible! Thank you!
