I've got a 2003 Explorer. When it's really cold, 20 or less

Customer Question

I've got a 2003 Explorer. When it's really cold, 20 or less like today, the key will not turn in the ignition. Eventually after warming the key and retrying some 810 minutes , it will start just fine. New ignition switch?
JA: Can you turn the steering wheel at all? And what about the key? Is it worn or damaged?
Customer: key looks nornal although it is the original from 2003; wheel will turn a little sometines until it locks;doesn't seem to be the typical rock the steering wheel because owhen it does turn I haven't touched the wheel
JA: Are you fixing your Explorer yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: no repairs so far put some hand warmers on the steering column this morning and that seemed to help
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: don't thinbk so

Hello and welcome!

My name isCustomerand I can assist you with your question.

Expert:  AMEDEE replied 7 months ago.

This condition is caused by a faulty ignition lock cylinder or ignition key.

I would start by trying a new ignition key first.

If the problem persists, the ignition lock cylinder will need to be replaced. (it comes with a new key)
