Someone towed it back wheels down while vehicle was in park,

Customer Question

Someone towed it back wheels down while vehicle was in park
JA: Besides this, what condition is the car in?
Customer: Car is in good condition. Just afraid they damaged the transmission on the 4x4
JA: What is the model/year of your Ford?
Customer: 2001 Expedition
JA: Are you fixing your Expedition yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: No going to go see it tomorrow to find out what damage has been done. I have been told that the vehicle is ok. But I don't think you can tow it without disconnecting the driveshaft or all 4 wheels off of the ground.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Is this going to cost me to get an answer?

Hi Diana,

Your vehicle should not have been towed with rear wheels on the ground.

Over a short distance at low speed, it could be ok.

I would think there could be some abnormality in the transfer case.

Something to pass onto your repairer for comments.

Hello again,

Do you need any further help?

I hope my advice has been of assistance to you.

Kind regards

Can you tell me if the vehicle was in park with emergency brake on what kind if possible damage could have happened. Going to see vehicle tomorrow. They were not available over the weekend. Need to know what to look for or check to determine if there is damage so I can determine if I need to put it in the shop.

Hi Diana,

The rear park brake linings and rotors will most certainly be worn out if the park brake was on.

With the transmission in Park, it should be ok, but I would be very concerned with the transfer case and/or rear differential.

Very surprised how it could have been towed like this.

Was it towed without your authority?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
it was towed without my authority and that is why I am so upset that they treated the vehicle like this. They should have known how to properly tow a vehicle to avoid any damage. If there are issues, I feel it may be a fight to get the towing company to pay for damages created by their employee.

Hi Diana,

I would be getting a full mechanical inspection.

If you weren't parked illegally in any way, then the towing company should pay for all the repairs.

I hope you have their details as well.

Have they stated the reason for the tow?
