A dead fuel gauge usually indicates a bad fuel pump. Not always though. To be sure you will need to do some electrical testing and you may need a scan tool. Did you replace the fuel pump recently?

fuel pump is maybe 4 months old. The fuel gauge stays on empty with the low fuel light on. Even when I fill it up

Is it possible that the float is pinned against the side of the fuel tank? I've seen that a number of times on these trucks. As you put the fuel pump in it will sometimes rotate so that the float gets pinned in one position.

If you access the fuel pump connector you can see if there is a signal from the fuel pump float using a multimeter.

Hi. Why did you replace the fuel pump to begin with a few months ago?
