The yellow gas cap light is stating that the PCM (Engine Computer) has detected a fuel vapor leak and it informs the driver with the warning light. Your engine will leak actual fuel. The fuel vapor system is a system designed to send fuel vapors back to the engine to be burned internally. It will not be dangerous to drive back home and have your mechanic look at it to find the problem.
