Hello, my name is ***** ***** I am a professional here at Justanswer. Thank you for your question and I will assist you with your concern.

Have you scanned the computer system to see if there are any fault codes setting?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Is this obd
Expert:  Ron replied 1 year ago.

The 1988 is an OBD I system but it can still be scanned. If you can get this done and post back with any fault codes that should be setting and we can work from there.

I don't have obd 1 equipment just newer stuff. Can they be flashed?
Expert:  Ron replied 1 year ago.

You will need an OBD 1 compatible scan tool to retrieve these codes. The computer dose not need flashing.
