Customer Question

I bought a 2002 Ford Escape for my daughter and it cuts off while driving without warning. We can stop and start up immediately without problems but can determine the problem or solution.
JA: Will the headlights turn on? Is the battery fully charged?
Customer: Not sure of the headlights but the battery appears to be charged.
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: No, I am not a mechanic. I have a gentleman that works in our maintenance department at work that does excellent repairs. He has replaced the fuel filter at this point but that's all.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: No
JA: OK. Got it. I'm sending you to a secure page on JustAnswer so you can place the $5 fully-refundable deposit now. While you're filling out that form, I'll tell the Ford Mechanic about your situation and then connect you two.

Is the check engine light on? Does it shut off driving at road speed or at stops?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No, at road speed.

No check engine light? Is that correct?

What is the engine size?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I came on for a period of time and went off.

It sounds like a possible crankshaft sensor. I would have it checked for codes at your local parts store and repost the codes.

Crankshaft sensor? Expensive?
Expert:  Cary York replied 1 year ago.

Less than 1 hour labor and $40.00 for the sensor.
