2002 ford explorer xls 4.0 4wd: 2002 ford explorer fuel gauge

2002 ford explorer fuel gauge problem, a xls 4wd v6, when I turn vehicle on fuel indicator is fine, but sometimes the gauge drop to empty, if I stop and turn off the ignition and turn back on it work properly sometimes it does this and sometimes after 3 or so days it will do it again.

no it doesn't matter what the level

I can be driving and then for no reason it drops to empty, again when I stop

Most common would be a problem with the fuel level sensor. Do you have a mileage to empty indicator in the message center?
