I changed the upper radiator hose after draining. Started

I changed the upper radiator hose after draining. Started filling back up and after 2 gal of coolant & one gal of water it started over flowing. I was filling from the resevor tank. Is this correct

You are correct you fill up the degas bottle tank to top off the system. When it gets to the top you need to let it sit for the level to go down and repeat this until the level no longer goes down. From there you can start and idle the vehicle with the heater on. This will allow you to know if the air is out of the system.
