Customer Question

my mechanic says I have to replace my engine because these engines have sludge problems. This sound pretty fishy to me. It's a 2005 F150.
The vehicle sounds as if the timing is off — kind of like a diesel engine.
The engine is the 5.4 liter.

These engine are prone to sludge, but that is only if there is poor maintenance, like long times between oil changes, over 5000 miles, and also using low quality oil or the wrong oil.

These engines are known for faulty camshaft VCT solenoids and cam phasers that are driven by the timing chains on the camshaft and oil pressure controlled to advance or retard the timing of the camshafts for emissions.

Did he show you the sludge or just mention it?
Did he get any trouble codes from the PCM (Engine Computer) for the problem you have?
