Ford explorer 4wd: i have a 40l 98 explorer 4wd auto replacing

i have a 40l 98 explorer 4wd auto replacing the fender mount starter relay 3 post thin wire terinal and elbow slip on terminal on only skinny post all wires on one top not used and if jumped startes engine runs normal charging ok etc if i seperate any thicker wiring no noise b4 start mode and when jumped pins no starter now i need to jumpo btm post to pin to start engine has new starter battery alternator and now 45.00 relay where am i not looking
