Taurus: My 2000 Taurus makes a growling noise especially on

Customer Question

My 2000 Taurus makes a growling noise especially on start up. It subsides a little as the car runs. I tought it could be the water pump bearings since I know a leak a little fluid out of the weep hole. Also, my ac works in the morning, or on start up, but blows hot air after running a while. I hear a hissing from the compressor area, and the compressor clutch only spins every once in a while.

Hello. My name is ***** ***** I will be helping you today. You are most likely right on on the water pump. If its leaking the bearings shot and the sound is consistent with bearing noise. What your A/C is doing is called short cycling. Most likely due to low refrigerant. If you havent had it topped off in a couple of years or so it could just be normal loss. Otherwise there could be a leak. With R134 refrigerant the molecules are so tiny that a tiny amount will leak out in a perfectly good system with no leaks and as more gets out it eventually gets low enough to cause pressure issues.
