2006 Ford: AWD..incline..wrench light comes..light goes

Customer Question
2006 Ford Freestyle AWD 71K...
2006 Ford Freestyle AWD 71K. When I punch the gas in a passing situation or steep incline the wrench light comes on and I cannot gain any speed...will not hit the passing gear. Pull over, PARK, turn off/turn back on and light goes out and I can proceed. As long as I gradually increase speed seems to be fine...just no "passing gear". A NHTSA complaint has been filed.

Hello and Welcome to Justanswer, My name is XXXXX XXXXX I am here to try and assist your with your question.

The wrench light come on when the PCM sees a system fault and when the light is coming on, the PCM will set and store a fault code. The next step is to have the system scanned and the code or codes retrieved , once you have them we can direct you in the correct repair. One known cause for this problem is a dirty and sludged up throttle body or in some cases a failing throttle body. One thing you can try before replacing anything is to clean the throttle body real well with some carb cleaner, when doing so disconnect the negative battery cable. If the problem returns then the scan will need to done and the code retrieved.
