Hi I would like to help you out. During removal of the seal again give the crankshaft dampener a very close inspection for a groove where the seal rides. These seals can wear a groove into the dampener and this causes the seal to have very poor contact and leak. If its ok crankshaft walking or bent crankshaft may be suspected causing the premature seal failure. Also verify with the parts store that the seal is correct, it is sometimes helpful to check the previous year and next year models for the same parts number because depending on the actual build date of the engine may be for an earlier year or later year if it built around the cutoff date. Also if you have not owned the truck since brand new it is possible the engine may not be original to the truck. If you have any other questions or concerns please reply and I would be glad to help. thank you

what would cause that iner part of the seal to rip like it did?

If the dampener was grooved or had a rough edge in it that could cut it.
