Thunderbird: liter..electrical..cant into first manually, it

Resolved Question:

my 95 4.9 liter thunderbird has a transmission electrical problem, i cant find it. It will always start off in secaond gear, unless you shut the engine off, pull the car into gear and when you start off it will shift correctly until you stop again. Also if you pull it into first manually, it will not move as if it is in high gear.

Hi, thank you for asking your question on JustAnswer.

The most common problem for this symptom is the transmission range sensor. Ford had a lot of problems with the sensor and connector connection with high resistance and water intrusion. To verify, a scan tool is needed that can retrieve transmission codes and monitor range sensor input data to the powertrain control module. Ford had a kit which included a new sensor and connector assembly. The part number is XXXXX and is a dealer only item. The sensor is mounted to the drivers side of the transmission case and the shift lever passes through it. There could be other issues causing this symptom that could be confirmed with the scanner also, but this sensor/connector issue is by far the most common.
