2002 FORD RANGER 4X4: ANY PROBLEMS WITH REAR AXLE BREAKAGE

Customer Question

ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS WITH REAR AXLE BREAKAGE ON THE 2002 FORD RANGER
4X4? I PURCHASED ONE WITH 67K MILES IN JANUARY. LAST WEEK I WAS IN A SINGLE
VEHICLE ROLLOVER ACCIDENT. THE LAST THING I REMEMBER IS A QUICK LATERAL JERK. I
WAS KNOCKED OUT BRIEFLY,SO REALLY COULDN'T ANSWER QUESTIONS. YESTERDAY I WENT
TO THE TOWING SERVICE TO GET MY PERSONAL ITEMS FROM THE TRUCK AND NOTICED A TIRE/WHEEL IN THE BED. IT WAS FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR, OBVIOUSLY BROKEN OFF
AT SOME POINT DURING THE ACCIDENT. WHAT MAKES ME EVEN MORE CURIOUS, IS THAT
THERE WERE NO SCUFFS(ALL TIRES WERE NEW)ON THE SIDEWALLS. I'M ASSUMING, OF
COURSE, THAT IT WOULD TAKE A SIGNIFICANT BLOW TO THE TIRE/WHEEL ASSEMBLY TO
BREAK IT FROM THE AXLE. ANY THOUGHTS?

Hello and thanks for using Just Answer.I will try my best to help you with your question.

For a rear axle shaft to shear off, you would have to of had a very bad axle bearing that was grinding away at the axle shaft (but you would hear this noise) or a strong severe impact to the wheel to break the axle off.

There are no known problems with Ford factory axle shafts.
