Do you get any little clunk or noise from the transmission or is it just dead?

There is a shaft that drives the oil pump in that transmission that splines into the torque converter. If the spline strip it stops all fluid flow in the trans. If you were experiencing no other failures prior to this that is likely the cause. A good transmission shop may be able to just replace the converter and shaft, but the trans will have to come apart for inspection one way or the other.
