2001 ford f150: with 208,000 miles..air flow..intake..egr valve…

Customer Question
I have a 2001 ford...
I have a 2001 ford f150 4.2 with 208,000 miles and six speed.

The 1st symtoms
Lack of power
Detonation(spark knock)
Hesitation/surge of acceleration.

Diagnostic codes.

p0174
p0171
lean bank 1 and 2

p0401-insufficient air flow..

What I have done.
Checked and cleanded air flow sensor.
Raplaced Intake gasket.
Raplaced egr valve.
air filter.
cleaned troatle housing.
replaced egr sensor.

the p0174 amd p0171 codes finally came off after all those steps, but the p401 code still remains. Lack of power, detonation and hesitation improve to about a 90% but if I do a sudden pedal acceleration it will do it again.

I have run out of ideas. any help out there?

So is the P0401 the last code to clear?

Hello Ron,

sorry for taking so long to reply back. Yes the p0401 code is the last to clear, but as i said the symptoms still reamain, not as bad.

Ford Mechanic: Ron, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 years ago
The code P0401 is in most cases caused by a bad DPFE (egr pressure ) sensor and when they are bad they can cause the symptoms you are describing. I would start with replacing the DPFE and see if this straighten out your concerns. You may also want to check with your local dealer as there was a recall on the DPFE that may still apply for you.

I have being told about checking the vaccum hoses for cracks and air leaks, where are those located? would that cause it to give that code?

Ford Mechanic: Ron, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 years ago
If you had leaking vacuum , you would get lean codes (P0171 and P0174) the code P0401 is a DPFE code.
