2001 Windstar quits when the...
2001 Windstar quits when the engine compartment gets too hot. Ususally will restart after cool-down with hood open. First time it happened, we had it towed. Dealer said that fuel pump relay fuse was blown. Second time it happened, we had it towed again. Dealer said there had to be a short in wiring harness or a component, but was unable to find it after three days of looking. Local independent mechanic said because it does not cause the check engine light to go on, it could be any of a number of things. One indicator seems to be that the Trac Off, ABS, and Brake warning lights all come on (steady on- no blinking) before the engine either quits while idling, or will not re-start after being turned off for a few minutes during hot weather.

You need to check the fuel pressure next time it will not start, to see if there is enough fuel pressure. Its looking like based on your descriotion the fuel pump is failing. The pump is getting hot and seizing up till it cools down and can then spin again.

Those are all seperate issues not associated with your no start issues.

Would it help to keep the fuel tank full?

Keep it full of fuel will not prevent a fuel pump from acting up.

Are there sensors on all four wheels for the other issue, or just on front wheels? Thanks

There are 4 wheel speed sensors, You will need to verify the brake pressure switch recal lhas been performed and verify it has not affected the ABS, also you need to retrieve the codes since often the result is alot of ABS codes which means the ABS module is fualty.

Thanks Chris- I will start by having the fuel pump replaced. Please let me know if you think of anything else that may contribute to the problem. I'm having a similar problem with my 1996 F 150 with the 4.9 L straight six. I saw something on another site that suggested the Ignition Control Module might be failing when overheated, and leaving the hood up does seem to speed up "recovery time".Did not see an ICM listed at the parts sites for the 01 windstar. The truck hasn't cut off while running, but doesn't want to re-start when it is hot outside.
