no lights at all ,when shifted into neatral the engine will rev to 2500,then back off.

You need to check and make sure the throttle cable is not stuck or that the throttle plate inside the throttle body is not binding, the plate should be closed at idle. You can disconnect the throttle cable and manually move the throttle. If you disconnect the cable and the idle returns and lowers it is likely the cable. My first thought here without seeing it would be the throttle body is dirty and the plate is sticking. You can purchased throttle body cleaner, an aerosol can and spray the inside to clean it. Also make sure the cruise control cable which is also hooked to the throttle body is not binding or sticking. The last picture shows the throttle plate, the inside area is the area that sludges up.

wouldn't it stick all the time? the rpm will return to idle after it does it's overspeed, and this problem does not happen every day. It had been running well the past couple of days, but today it is been a bad day to drive it. It will either return to normal at times or will continue to overspeed when shifted back into drive

Ford Mechanic: EMRSR, Master Certified Service Manager replied 8 years ago
It may not stick all the time, if this were an electrical issue it would set a code, and a warning light would be on. I am inclined to think it is a mechanical concern.

Didn't Lincoln have this same type of problem, and would it apply here also. It was acouple of years back, what did they find wrong?
Ford Mechanic: EMRSR, Master Certified Service Manager replied 8 years ago

throttle body and cables just cleaned, lubed no binding or sticking noted. When I drove it this morning it acted normal, same this evening. It is not a dailey occurance, but very annoying when it does show up.If it is a faulty cold temp sensor would it always code?reminds me of cold winter starts,it was slow to back down to even with some engine temp.
Ford Mechanic: EMRSR, Master Certified Service Manager replied 8 years ago
I still go with sludge in the throttle body here.
